In the interest of not missing a month on the old blog and considering the fact that the Chicago White Sox are playing in the first game of their first World Series since 1959 tomorrow night, I thought I'd do a short post tonight.
Seems the South Side is finally getting some recognition. It's about time and, for once, it's well deserved. Too often all that's publicized about the South Side is gangs, shootings, and drug deals. So...let's all be grateful for the Sox as they finally cast a positive spotlight on the South Side.
Having gone to high school across the Dan Ryan expressway from U.S. Cellular Field (then Comiskey Park), I have a certain affinity for the team and the park. I was fortunate enough to attend three regular season games this season although acquiring World Series tickets was a no-go. We tried but when they sell out in 18 minutes (I think), there's not much you can do. So I will be content to watch the series on TV. This could be a once-in-a-lifetime event and I'm proud to call myself a Chicagoan.
In other news, I attended the second of two Paul McCartney shows at the United Center Wednesday night. It was a great show - he still has it. It was essentially a Beatles show with some Paul McCartney solo stuff dabbled in and a few big Wings hits. All of the classics were there - Yesterday, Blackbird, The Long and Winding Road, Hey Jude, Let it Be. He played the first song the Beatles ever recorded - very cool - and even told a fun story about the origins of Blackbird. From Wings we heard Band on the Run, Live and Let Die, Jet, and Let Me Roll It. Very cool. As for the solo stuff, we were treated to Maybe I'm Amazed, Flaming Pie (from 1997's excellent "Flaming Pie" album) and a few tracks from the new album ("Chaos and Creation in the Backyard"). Overall, a very fun show from a living legend. It was well worth $75 plus parking.
